Thomas Calderone and Aaron Mayes
qualified for the NAIA/ITA Men's Tennis National Tournament by winning the Midwest Region Regional Qualifying tournament in Grand Rapids, MI. Thirty-two teams began the event but it was the #1 doubles team from SAU that stood alone in the winner's circle on Saturday. In the semifinal match on Saturday morning, the Cougar pair defeated the #1 doubles team from Huntington University (Khudziy and Hungria) 8-6 and then overpowered the team of Aaron Hendrick and Christof Saari 8-4 to seal the tournament win.
By virtue of this win the Cougar duo will travel to Mobile, AL in mid-October to represent SAU at the national NAIA/ITA tournament.
In another exciting finish, Nathan Scholten
advanced to the finals of the singles consolation bracket with some inspired tennis, defeating four opponents before falling to Austin Hunt of Cornerstone, 6-4, 6-3 in the final.
Overall it was a highly successful tournament for the Cougars and they hope that it will act as a springboard for inspired play in the final half of their conference schedule.
