CLERMONT, Fla. – The Spring Arbor University softball team wrapped up its time at The Spring Games with matchups against No. 2 Saint Xavier University and Hannibal-LaGrange University on Friday. Senior Morgan Ledford blasted her third and fourth homers of the season against Hannibal-LaGrange, but it would not be enough as the Trojans held on to defeat SAU 4-3. Prior to that game, the Cougars would also fall victim to SXU 10-0.

Spring Arbor 3, Hannibal-LaGrange 4

LOCATION: Clermont, Fla.

RECORDS: Spring Arbor 5-11, Saint Xavier 8-5, Hannibal-LaGrange 7-7

  • No. 2 Saint Xavier flexed its muscle in the first game of the day, three home runs, including a fifth inning grand slam by Amanda Ruskowsky, on its way to the victory.
  • Ruskowsky was just as good in the circle posting a complete game, two-hit shutout.
  • Back-to-back hits by Maddison Brock and Kyla Semones in the fifth inning broke up the no-hit bid.

  • Spring Arbor bounced back in its second game with some early offense. A first inning RBI double by Kelsey Brown put the Cougars on top. Then, in the second inning, Ledford led off the frame with a bomb to right-center field to give SAU a 2-1 advantage.
  • The Cougars made it a 3-1 game in the fourth inning with Ledford second big fly of the game.
  • However, Hannibal-LaGrange would answer with a run in the home half of the fourth and two more in the fifth to grab a 4-3 lead.
  • Spring Arbor threatened in the seventh, putting the tying run in scoring position, but the Trojans would escape the jam with no damage done to secure the victory.
  • Ledford was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with two home runs. Brown finished 3-for-4 with a stolen base while Semones recorded two hits.
  • Brown pitched all six innings giving up just one earned run. She also posted three strikeouts.

Spring Arbor returns to Michigan and will host the University of Saint Francis (2-2) in its home opener on Tuesday, Mar. 14 at 3 p.m.
