WINONA LAKE, Ind. – With a 12-run flurry, the Spring Arbor University softball team rallied to defeat Grace College 13-5 in game one of a Crossroads League doubleheader Saturday. The Cougars were unable to get the bats going in game two, however, falling to the Lancers 2-1.

SCORES: Spring Arbor 13, Grace 5;

Spring Arbor 1, Grace 2

LOCATION: Miller Field | Winona Lake, Ind.

RECORDS: Spring Arbor 17-25 (12-14 CL), Grace 21-20 (14-12 CL)

  • Spring Arbor trailed 5-1 entering the fifth inning, but the Cougars erupted for 12 runs over the next two frames to bring the eight-run mercy rule into effect.
  • Sydney Taylor highlighted an eight-run fifth with a three-run double. Aubrey Herrema and Hope Longenbarger also added RBI hits in the inning.
  • The Cougars were not done yet, tallying four more run the next inning. Morgan Ledford got the scoring started with a two-RBI single while Longenbarger and Kyla Semones also delivered run-producing hits.
  • Four different players drove in multiple runs, including Taylor who led SAU with three RBI. Taylor, Ledford and Liz Campeau scored two runs each.
  • Ledford was also brilliant in the circle. After entering in relief in the fourth inning, the senior tossed 2.2 scoreless and hitless innings to earn the victory.

  • Savannah Weaver put SAU on top early in game two with an RBI double in the top of the first inning. But, that would be the only run the Cougars scored in the contest.
  • Grace tied the score in the bottom of the first and took the lead with another run in the third inning.
  • That would be all the run support GC pitchers Hannah England and Elaina McClellan needed as they combined to shutout Spring Arbor over the final six innings.
  • Weaver went 2-for-3 at the plate. Allison VanBrandt, Kelsey Brown and Taylor also registered hits.
  • Lauren Heath pitched all six innings giving up just one earned run and striking out six batters.

Spring Arbor will close out the season with 10 consecutive home games beginning with a doubleheader against Indiana Wesleyan University (30-10, 17-7 CL) on Tuesday, Apr. 18. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
