SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Nearly every year since 2005, student-athletes and coaches from Spring Arbor University take a week in June to travel to Two Moose Camp in Glen, Montana.
The Montana Young Leaders Retreat is a unique opportunity for athletes identified as leaders to engage in a week full of experiences that will equip them to lead more efficiently in the future. The trip not only focuses on the development of athletic leadership, but at its core is the Spring Arbor University Athletics Mission Statement:
Spring Arbor University Athletics seeks to use the pursuit of athletic excellence to develop within our student-athletes a depth of faith, strength of character, and skills of leadership essential for a lifetime of service to Jesus Christ.
Additionally, the trip focuses on four primary goals to build spiritual foundations that will help develop Christian leaders in the Cougar Athletic Department, the campus of SAU and our community. These goals seek to help students deepen faith, grow strength of character and skills of leadership, help equip and empower them with the tools to carry out the SAU mission, forge new and deeper relationships across sports teams and to have fun.
Along with the 24 athletes, and coaches and staff, SAU Associate Professor of Biblical Studies Richard Cornell will be making the trip. Dr. Cornell's primary teaching responsibilities include Greek, New Testament studies, biblical ethics and biblical foundations for Christian spirituality.
Two Moose Camp is owned by Harvey Gainey – a former member of the SAU Board of Trustees – and his wife, Annie. In addition to all of the incredible scenery of "Big Sky" country, the Gainey's have created a remarkable campus that is perfect for this kind of retreat. There is a beautiful chapel that was duplicated from a church the Gainey's found in Europe and a dining hall / meeting room looking over the Big Hole River, which flows throughout Gainey's 6000-plus acre ranch.
