Sam Riggleman
Head Coach

Spring Arbor University baseball coach Sam Riggleman begins his sixth year at the helm of the Cougars in 2010. The long-time mentor began his coaching career at John Wesley College in 1977, and has been wildly successful over its thirty year span. The Cougar's front man has compiled an impressive 820-527-2 career record, including a best ever 48-5 record with SAU in 2007 and a 40-9 mark in 2008.

Riggleman's road in returning to Spring Arbor University to coach at his alma mater has had several stops along the way. After getting his start at John Wesley, Riggleman moved on to Mount Vernon Nazarene (1980-88). He made the next stop in his journey at Southern Illinois University (1988-94). Starting as a pitching coach, Riggleman became SIU's head coach for his final four years there, winning over 80 games in the process. After his time at SIU, Riggleman chose to return to NAIA baseball as the head coach for the Bethel College Pilots (1995-99), where he racked up more than 120 wins over five years, placing him second all time on Bethel's career wins list.

In 2000 Riggleman made a departure from Midwestern winters and took his skills to Dallas Baptist University in Texas. In his three seasons at DBU (2000-02), Riggleman led the Patriots to two appearances at the NAIA World Series, including a runner-up finish in 2000. That season helped Riggleman put an exclamation point on his career,  as he was named as the NAIA National Coach of the Year by his peers, a feat which he accomplished again in 2007 in his third year as the head coach for Spring Arbor University.

Throughout his career Riggleman has coached several major league players, including Tim Belcher (Cleveland) who was selected first overall in the 1983 major league draft. Riggleman has also mentored major leaguers Sean Bergman (Minnesota, Detroit, Houston), and Alan Levine who was a member of several major league pitching staffs, including the Detroit Tigers.

Riggleman's resume also includes coaching baseball on a national level. He was an instructor for the United States national team that traveled to Cuba in 1991. He has served as a special clinician for the American All-Star Baseball Coaches Association and was the head coach for a 2001 NAIA all star team that traveled to the Czech Republic.

Though the journey was long, it has come full circle. Riggleman is back "home" with his Cougars, and the results so far have been nothing short of amazing.

After a 21-27 start with Spring Arbor in his first year as head coach in 2005, Riggleman has navigated the program 180 degrees in the opposite direction. The Cougars improved their mark to 34-22 (.607) in 2006 and made an appearance at the NCCAA World Series, finishing as the runner's up, dropping a close decision to Malone College in the final game. 2006 was also a landmark season for Riggleman, as the team helped him earn his 700th career victory, making him one of only ten men to reach the plateau in NAIA history. His 789-512-2 record places him in the top five among active NAIA coaches and the top 10 overall for wins.

2007 and 2008 were both masterpieces for Riggleman and the Cougars. The team put together the most impressive season in the history of Spring Arbor University baseball in 2007, cruising to an astounding 48-5 record, capturing the conference, regional and super regional titles and advancing to the championship game of the 2007 NAIA World Series. At one point in the 2007 season the Cougars rattled off an unprecedented 36 consecutive victories. Not to be taken as a flash in the pan, Riggleman's Cougars backed  the 2007 season up in 2008 with a 40-9 mark, repeat conference, regional and super regional titles and a semi-final finish at the NAIA World Series. Last spring Riggleman's Cougars completed a tri-fecta by qualifying for NAIA Championship play for the third straight year, making an appearance at the NAIA Opening Round.

Riggleman's passion for coaching is equaled by his passion for developing young leaders. Serving Spring Arbor University as director of athletics, Riggleman has been instrumental in developing competitive athletic programs that are Christ-centered. Since taking over as director of athletics, Riggleman has helped to develop the Montana Leadership Institute, a one-week retreat each that focuses on developing academic, athletic and spiritual leadership in Spring Arbor University athletes each summer. The long-time mentor has been widely recognized for his leadership characteristics and was inducted into the NCCAA Hall of Fame in 2007 and the NAIA Hall of Fame in 2008.

Riggleman resides in Horton, Mich. with his wife, Kathy, who he met as a student at Spring Arbor University. They have two grown children: Jeremie, who is married to Kara (Kunst) and is a member of the SAU student development staff; and Sarah (Yocum) who resides in Mishawaka, Ind. with her husband, Andrew, and their two grandchildren, Laura Elizabeth and Logan.
