[Men's Tennis] Cougar Fall in First Round of NAIA

MOBILE, AL - The men's tennis team's fantastic year has come to a close at the NAIA National Championships in Mobile, AL. The Cougars drew Aquinas College in the first round and fell to the #13 seed 7-2.

Despite the score, the match was close. Starting with doubles, Spring Arbor's #2 double team of David Darling and Nate Scholton , who had not lost a match together at #2 doubles all season and had a match point to win, but could not convert and would eventually lose the match. It was the first loss in 16 matches at that position.

The two wins for the Cougars came at #2 singles Thomas Calderone who won the first set 6-3 and was down in the second set 3-5 and on the verge of going to a third set, but stormed back to take the second set 7-5 to win the match. Matt Wojtkowski won his match at #6 singles 6-1, 6-3 for the other Spring Arbor point.

The Cougars finish the year with a best ever 26-3.

[Men's Tennis] Tennis players receive national recognition

Several SAU men's tennis players garnered awards from the NCCAA. Steve Elzerman, David Darling, Aaron Mayes, Nathan Scholten and Thomas Calderone all received NCCAA Scholar-Athlete recognition. In addition, David Darling, Thomas Calderone and Aaron Mayes were selected as 1st team All-Americans. Finally, David Darling and Thomas Calderone were selected to the All-tournament singles team and Thomas Calderone and Aaron Mayes were voted to the All-tournament NCCAA doubles team.

The Cougars came up short in their shot at a national championship but their effort cannot be questioned. The Cougars managed to get one point in doubles play (from the #2 doubles team of David Darling and Nathan Scholten) so going into singles they knew they would have to win 4 out of the 6 singles matches to win the championship. Matt Wojtkowski lost in a 3rd set tiebreaker at #6 singles (6-0, 5-7, 9-11) and despite other gutsy efforts the Cougars ended up on the losing end of a 5-1 score with 3 winnable matches uncompleted on the court.

The Cougars now turn their attention to the NAIA tournament. Their first match will be against Aquinas (MI) on Tuesday.

The Cougars were forced to play some long, difficult points in the Alabama sun but they prevailed over Indiana Wesleyan University 5-1 to advance to the finals of the NCCAA national tournament. The SAU squad got key wins at #1 and #2 doubles and then Thomas Calderone, Aaron Mayes and Matt Wojtkowski won in singles to clinch the Cougars' decisive 5th point.

Tomorrow morning the Cougars will face 18th ranked (NAIA) Campbellsville in the final.

[Men's Tennis] Cougars advance to semifinals in NCCAA tournament

The Cougar express keeps rolling, this time into the semifinals of the NCCAA national tournament. SAU conceded only one point in the 5-1 victory over sister school, Roberts Wesleyan University to up their season record to 25-1. At #1 doubles Thomas Calderone and Aaron Mayes defeated the current #9-ranked (NAIA) doubles team of Beka Buchukuri and Julio Toledo Lopez by a convincing score of 8-3 to help lead the Cougars to a commanding 3-0 lead after doubles play.

With a 3-0 record in pool play, the Cougars will advance to the semifinals as the top seed in their pool, playing the #2 seed from the opposite pool, Indiana Wesleyan University, at 9:00 tomorrow morning.

The Cougars stayed perfect in their second pool play match at the NCCAA national tournament.with a 5-0 win over Northwestern. The SAU squad will face the other undefeated team in their pool, Roberts Wesleyan University, tomorrow morning at 9:00 central time.

The SAU men's tennis team got off to a good start in pool play at the NCCAA national tournament in Mobile, AL. The Cougars surged out to a 3-0 lead after doubles and then solid play by Nathan Scholten and Matt Wojtkowski closed out the match.
